Treason is the “king of crimes,” the only criminal act defined in the U.S. Constitution. In 1807, Thomas Jefferson’s ex-Vice President, Aaron Burr, was arrested in Alabama for treason and returned to Richmond, VA, to be tried in Circuit Court. Jefferson was determined that Burr should hang. But was Burr truly a traitor, a dangerous adventurer plotting to carve an empire for himself out of Texas and the Louisiana Purchase? The King of Crimes tells us of the great forces that almost tore our young country apart, and the Constitution – and remarkable men – that held it together.
Seeking the following roles:
[THOMAS JEFFERSON] – 50’s-70’s, African American. The current president and antagonist of the story. Jefferson wanted Aaron Burr’s head, despite law and order.
[JOHN MARSHALL] – 50’s-70’s, any ethnicity. A supreme court justice and cousin of Jefferson, Marshall is a slovenly slave owner with a taste for Madeira. Marshall must determine if Aaron Burr is treasonous.
[GENERAL WILKINSON] – 50’s-70’s, any ethnicity. A blustery character, Wilkinson is finding playing at politics much different than playing at war. Constantly in over his head, stubborn as hell.
[BLENNERHASSETT] – 20’s-40’s, any ethnicity. An Irishman, a con artist, a terrible husband, Aaron Burr’s errand boy. Helps to assemble troops and resources to start Burr’s war. Must have a GOOD Irish accent.
[ROBIN SPURLOCK] – 18-30’s, African American. John Marshall’s slave and confidant with an interesting perspective on the story. Hears everything, speaks plainly, acts as the story’s narrator and comic relief at times.
Auditions will be held by appointment only on 11/30/17 from 6-9PM in Richmond, VA.
